What’s This Blog About?
This is about 5 posts slow to being the one heralding the birth of this blog, but this post by Anne Truitt Zelenka that I happened across was just too tempting not to blog about. While pondering what direction this new baby of mine would take, several blogs that I very much respect (e.g. Copyblogger, which is a really great read, by the way) championed finding a niche for a new blog.
But that didn’t really sit right with me, and I reasoned that since this is to be my personal blog and not a business one, I’d blog about whatever I like. Readers are welcome and nice and all, but neither popularity nor financial gain is the aim of this blog. As Ms Zelenka put it:
If you decide not to build up readership for a specific niche blog so as to make money through advertising and affiliate income, you can measure the success of your blog in other ways:
- Does it bring you into connection with people that you respect and that you learn from and that you can collaborate with?
- Does it introduce you to new ways of extending yourself?
- Do you learn by creating and maintaining and publishing it?
- Do you feel more human when you blog? (I do.)
The key to the social web is that you’re not just a consumer or a user or part of the audience. When you blog, you can do it as a three-dimensional human too. You don’t have to turn yourself into an online magazine.
Right now, my blog is more about the personal objectives. The others can come later, if at all. Nonetheless, I’ve tried to define the topics I feel this blog is likely to cover, in the About page. Of course, this is subject to change as I like it ![]()
